    Alwinton Show 2007

    davidsonslinn.jpg

John Tribe’s photo of Davidson’s Linn introduces our annual pilgrimage to Alwinton Show 2007, traditionally the last major agricultural show of the season and a ‘must’ for all old Wullupians and/or lovers of Northumberland.

We have been making this trip for over fifty years, always on the second Saturday in October and usually on a day when the heather and bracken clad hills around Alwinton are glorious with autumn colours and the first signs of the coming winter. This is always a happy occasion for us, meeting up with old friends and catching up on the ‘craic’ , while taking some time to see the Cumberland and Westmoreland style wrestling, the Hound Trail, the Fell Race and the other traditional aspects of a Show with a lengthy history – 2007 was apparently the 142nd iteration of the event!

A mixture of overcast weather and my incompetence meant that most of my photos were lost, here is a very short slideshow of the few that survived, please click here if you would like to add your photos to the set.

For folk that missed the 2006 Show, the event was followed by a very well supported and successful reunion in the Castle Hotel in Newcastle, this link generates a slideshow of images from the reunion, while this link shows the really nice set of Cheviot Hills images taken by John Tribe on his subsequent big Northumberland trip.

With some help from others, we plan to organise another reunion in 2008, probably on the Saturday evening of Alwinton Show. Does anyone know if the Crows Nest can accommodate 60+ people for a reunion meal? Click here to register your interest and to get onto the circulation list.
