    Auckland no more

The NZ leg of the trip didn’t work out quite as planned. At the last minute, our friends in Auckland were called away to the South Island to visit a terminally ill friend of theirs, an elderly man recently diagnosed with leukaemia. We were OK about this, we knew the details before we left the UK and we decided to maintain our schedule and to enjoy the Auckland sunshine while waiting for our friends to return. So much for plans! The weather has been reminiscent of a Scottish November, cold, windy, and overcast – we have spent much of our time huddled around the woodburning stove!

We made a trip to see the waterfront and downtown areas of the city, then had a very nice lunch in the revolving restaurant at the 328 metre SkyTower.

The waterfront views were quite spectacular, lots of sailing boats – this city on the sea boasts the highest rate of boat ownership in the world and is a mecca for every type of boat , from dinghies to Americas Cup contenders.

No photos worth showing, let’s hope for better luck when we arrive in OZ on Tuesday afternoon.
